GLA:D® is an evidence-based education and exercise program developed in Denmark and implemented in Australia through La Trobe University. It is designed to help people with hip and knee osteoarthritis reduce pain, improve function, and return to meaningful activities.
Research from the GLA:D® Australia Annual Report (2023) shows strong outcomes for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis, including reduced pain, improved quality of life, and decreased reliance on pain medication at 12 months. It also found that fewer participants wanted surgery after completing the program. While GLA:D® may not be suitable for everyone, your clinician will assess your needs and guide you to the most appropriate treatment options.
GLA:D® is suitable for people of all ages with mild to severe hip or knee osteoarthritis, helping to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life. It may also help delay or avoid surgery, and those who complete the program before joint replacement often experience faster recovery.
GLA:D® works because it uses targeted exercise and education to improve joint stability, muscle strength, and confidence in movement. Exercise not only strengthens the body but also supports overall health, reduces pain, and improves function in daily activities.
GLA:D® may not be appropriate if your pain is due to non-osteoarthritis causes (e.g. tumour, fracture, inflammatory arthritis, or soft tissue conditions), or if you have other significant health conditions that may limit safe participation (e.g. fibromyalgia or widespread chronic pain). It may also not be suitable if you are unable to safely participate in an exercise-based program or have difficulty understanding or following instructions.
The program includes 12 supervised exercise sessions over 6 weeks and 2 education sessions, with each session lasting approximately 60 minutes. All sessions are delivered by trained clinicians accredited by GLA:D® Australia.
GLA:D® sessions include education, where you learn about osteoarthritis, current research, and have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss with your clinician and group. Exercise sessions consist of a structured program of 10 exercises, along with warm-up and cool-down, targeting strength and function of the hips and knees. Sessions are delivered in small groups, with exercises tailored to your individual ability and needs.
Your clinician will review your progress and goals around 3 months after starting the program, helping you plan your next steps such as continuing exercise, returning to activities, or increasing overall physical activity. The exercises and strategies learned can be continued at home and used anytime to manage symptoms or maintain progress, even after setbacks or surgery.
It is normal to experience mild discomfort during and after new exercises, which may last up to 24 hours or slightly longer initially. Your clinician will guide you on how to monitor and manage your pain so you can progress safely without worsening your symptoms.
The cost of the GLA:D® program varies depending on the clinic and your individual circumstances. You may be able to claim through private health insurance, and eligible participants can access Medicare or publicly funded services to help cover some costs. If paying privately, the full program (2 education + 12 exercise sessions) typically ranges from $400–$800.
